Saturday morning improvers
Views of an instructor....
Saturday morning sailing was introduced in 2003 to cater for people looking to progress their sailing with other like-minded sailors and with the safety of a rescue boat being present.

Since the Spring training course these events have been extremely popular and have sometimes run well into the afternoon. As well as members progressing their sailing it is an ideal opportunity to bring along children who can try out the club optimists and are soon sailing around on their own.

Recently two of our Saturday Sailors entered the regular pursuit racing in the afternoon and did pretty well. Hopefully they'll soon be shouting "Starboard" and "No water" in the same friendly way the rest of us do!

Please note that Saturday morning improvers sessions finish at the end of October

In last years report I said that I did not know if I would enjoy these sessions so much in a wet season. This year we experienced a much more varied weather pattern. It rained it blew and the sun shone did any of this deter our members? No, in fact the number of people taking part this year was considerably higher than last year.

The children who were in their second season have now shown enormous confidence and skill on the water, and also shown a keenness to start trying to race. Two of them have dared to join Simon Hoy in the regular pursuit racing when the conditions were right. Others are now sailing for longer periods, and the youngest who last season only dared to watch, have either tried sitting in the boats or taken to the water with their elders or parents.

The number of adults sailing this season also rose significantly, bolstered I think by the number of club members sailing with their families.

The all day session in the summer were very popular we must ensure we do not loose any of these from the calendar. Family picnics are a regular occurrence.

Some of the children have in my opinion achieved a standard comparable to RYA level 1 and into level 2, and have been signed off for these skills in a club mini log book."
